Parallel Paths, Shared Legacy.

Parallel Paths, Shared Legacy.

Reflecting on our family’s journey, I find immense pride in the paths my brother, Prof. Michael Anthony (Mike) Henning, and I have carved, each in our unique domains. Born to Prof. Cosmo Grenville Henning and Joyce Roebuck, our upbringing was steeped in a rich tradition of academic excellence and a zest for exploration.

Divergent Paths, Shared Values

Mike, born on March 19, 1964, in Graaff-Reinet, demonstrated an early affinity for mathematics. His academic journey led him to the University of Natal, where he earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics. Today, as a distinguished professor at the University of Johannesburg, Mike’s contributions to discrete mathematics, particularly graph theory, have garnered international acclaim. His prolific output includes approximately 500 papers in esteemed journals, a testament to his dedication and intellectual prowess.

In contrast, my path led me to the field of medicine. Inspired by our father’s commitment to academia and service, I pursued a career in emergency medicine, a discipline that demands quick thinking and resilience. While our professional journeys differ, the foundational values instilled in us—perseverance, curiosity, and a commitment to excellence—remain a common thread.

A Bond Beyond Blood

Our shared experiences growing up fostered a deep bond. From spirited debates at the dinner table to collaborative problem-solving, these interactions not only enriched our relationship but also honed our critical thinking skills. Mike’s analytical approach to complex mathematical problems often mirrors the diagnostic challenges I encounter in the emergency room.

Continuing the Henning Tradition

Our father, Prof. Cosmo Henning, was a beacon of inspiration, exemplifying the importance of dedication and service. His legacy is evident in our pursuits: Mike’s groundbreaking research and my commitment to patient care.
